Coptrz awarded Mobile Ground Sensor contract as part of £300m MoD framework

Coptrz Defence have been awarded a contract with the UK Ministry of Defence to supply Mobile Ground Sensors (MGS) as part of the Human Machine Teaming (HMT) framework.

Designed to make soldiers more effective by pairing them with robotics, this framework has a headroom of £300m over a three-year period.

The award comes on the back of multiple recent projects Coptrz Defence received from the MoD, solidifying their position as a key trusted uncrewed technology partner.

The awarding Authority is Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), Future Capability Group (FCG), who have established the Expeditionary Robotics Centre of Expertise (ERCoE) for the contracting and experimentation activity in Robotic and Autonomous Systems (RAS) for the British Army’s RAS Strategy. The project then collates the evidence required for the Defence Integrated Review (IR) scheduled for 2025.

This specific requirement was for soldier portable, rapidly deployable, remoted & simple-to-use Mobile Ground Sensor Systems (MGS) to provide the user with a networked day and night, short-range reconnaissance capability for complex terrain where static and sUAS sensors can’t observe.

As part of the contract, Coptrz Defence will provide an internal tactical recon system, based around the Sky-Hero Sigyn, alongside comprehensive training for operations and maintenance of the systems allied to a support package both in person and digitally. This will be delivered as a hybrid solution including both in person and via the award-winning Coptrz Academy online uncrewed training platform.

Coptrz Defence offers a range of Robotic Autonomous Systems (RAS), including Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS), Uncrewed Ground Vehicles (UGV), Uncrewed Submersible Vehicles (USV) and state-of-the-art software that compliments this range.

The landscape in which modern warfare is conducted is ever-evolving. In today’s increasingly complex and uncertain battlefields, technology plays a pivotal role. The power of surveillance

Surveillance has been a transformative component in the advancement of military operations, revolutionising the means by which armed forces personnel gather critical information and establish keen situational awareness. Still today, forward operational units are frequently reliant on rudimentary intelligence about their surrounding environment, gathered through the execution of dangerous and time-costly ISR operations.

With these obstacles in mind, one solution which looks set to revolutionise the military landscape is Reveal Technology 's Farsight software. Seamlessly integrating with existing military systems, Farsight harnesses the power of advanced data analysis and artificial intelligence to arm the user with unparalleled situational awareness and intelligence-gathering capabilities.

Farsight features

Reveal’s Farsight software equips the user with the ability to generate real-time 2D maps and near-real-time 3D maps from UAS image data, resulting in dramatic savings not just on time, but also the logistical and cognitive burden shouldered by units navigating high-risk environments.

Reducing the burden without compromising quality

Farsight’s selective AI capability serves to significantly reduce the time and data burden, with no compromise on high-quality output. Models can be generated from brief aerial surveys, and the software excels even at elevated altitudes, mitigating much of the noise associated with lower drone flights. Following the completion of a flight over a selected area, users can view an instant 2D map from which they can begin to garner some initial awareness of their operational environment. From here, they can select specific areas of interest (AOIs), for which to generate intuitive 3D models which support Farsight’s full suite of AI features.

Innovating Warfare: Inside the Army Warfighting Experiment

The Army Warfighting Experiment presents a unique opportunity for cutting-edge military technology to be showcased and tested in real-world scenarios. Each year, the Army releases a new ‘hypothesis’ around a capability that they require fulfilling.

Hypothesis and Objectives

This year's Army Warfighting Experiment is focused on the ability to achieve a kinetic, ‘blunt & dislocate’ effect in urban environments. These advancements are not solely about enhancing troop effectiveness in such complex settings; they are also about examining how these emergent technologies can be seamlessly woven into existing military strategies to strengthen intelligence gathering and generate decisive results in urban warfare.

This hypothesis has four key stages, and started in the Summer of 2022 when Coptrz & Brigantes began with a paper submission (Level A), followed by a ‘Dragons Den’ style elimination round (Level B). This third round (Level C) is the physical showcasing of the most successful capability submissions. This will culminate in February 2024 with an opportunity for VIP’s to see the technology that has made it through this gruelling process.

Training and Stages of the Level C Testing

The Level C testing of the Experiment unfolds over four weeks:

Week 1 - The Crawl Stage: This initial phase focused on training the troops with new technologies, ensuring hands-on familiarity.
Week 2 - The Walk Stage: Here, the emphasis shifted to integrating these technologies into troops' tactics, techniques, and procedures.
Week 3 - The Run Stage: In this final phase, the troops fully implement their training in simulated operational environments, reflecting a significant leap from theory to practice.

During our visit, the troops had already been hands-on with the technology, meaning that they were able to integrate it into their Warfighting operations. Coptrz & Brigantes had brought forward the Farsight software by Reveal Technology, a real-time mapping software that helps plannners and officers at the tactical edge visualise the area of siege.

Sam Denniff & Terry Bryan CGC , our representatives, were able to be ‘on the shoulder’ of the troops as they moved through battle lanes in an urban village, advising, and giving support, but allowing the soldier to operate Reveal Farsight independently of our direct involvement.

Line of Sight Tool - The Line of Sight tool within Reveal Farsight enhances tactical situational awareness by allowing operators to ascertain visibility lines in a given terrain. This tool is crucial in both detecting and understanding adversary positions, aiding in stealth and strategic planning. It enables users to craft inventive solutions for combat scenarios, such as avoiding detection.
Field of View Tool - The Field of View tool in Reveal Farsight is designed to help users understand and analyse the visible area from a specific vantage point, which can be crucial for both avoiding enemy detection and understanding the enemy's perspective. By utilising this tool, operators can plan movements and positions more effectively, ensuring that they remain out of sight from adversaries or gain insights into where an adversary can see.
Route Planning Tool – This tool enables users to strategically generate routes directly onto the 3D Farsight models. This feature allows for detailed planning and visualisation of potential movement paths in an operational environment. When combined with the Line-of-Sight analysis, it provides a comprehensive overview, letting operators evaluate the visibility of these routes to the adversary, thus assessing the risk of detection.
Vertical Measurement Tool - The Vertical Measurement Tool within Reveal Farsight enables users to accurately measure the length, height, and diagonal distances from a specific point within a 3D model, helping to determine the success of operational activities, such as assessing what equipment is necessary for scaling buildings or obstacles.
Helicopter Landing Zone Surveying Tool – This tool within Reveal Farsight is designed to enhance the safety and efficiency of helicopter operations in challenging environments. It considers doctrinal limits and the capabilities of different airframes to recommend suitable locations for helicopter landings.

Reveal Farsight can process multiple UAS streams, allowing for efficient mission monitoring and reducing network load by pre-processing full-motion video streams, streamlining the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance process.

The troops were tasked with conducting assaults on several buildings within a village, employing the Reveal Farsight technology to plan their movements, pinpoint access points, and co-ordinate the necessary resources.

This process is highly efficient, with mission taking around 15 minutes —a 7-minute drone flight coupled with 8 minutes for data processing. During the live tests this week, we effectively created usable models with Parrot Anafi USA GOV drones within 15 minutes of pinpointing the target buildings to be cleared.

The indoor tactical robotics suite from SKY-HERO is undergoing a huge expansion in 2022, providing tactical operators with access to an easy-to-use, intelligent recon ecosystem that revolutionises mission safety.

Founded in 2013, SKY-HERO provides innovative tactical unmanned vehicles for challenging indoor environments. Their products are designed to keep people safe and meet the growing operational needs of law enforcement and security forces around the world.

In fact, since 2016, military, law enforcement, government, and security teams around the globe have been able to benefit from an innovative indoor tactical sUAV (aerial robot | drone), the highly successful Loki Mk2, already adopted by more than 1,000 teams across five continents, including 20 EU countries, 47 US states, and all 10 Canadian provinces.

Building off the success of the Loki internal tactical drone , SKY-HERO have expanded their eco-system, now offering a lightweight, throwable ground robot, purpose-built for the collection of real-time data and intelligence.

Development

Fully designed, tested, and constructed in Europe and the United States in conjunction with the world’s top counterterrorism squadrons, SKY-HERO’s Unified Tactical Indoor Recon Robotics System appears today as the ideal reconnaissance tool for first responders. Like the drones that we have become used to, the Sigyn robot guarantees a safer collection of real-time data from the field of operation.

If your security/defence teams already rely on the Loki drone for their daily scouting ops, you’ll now benefit from genuine additional ground support based on similar advanced technologies and, of course, bringing its share of advantages. The new Sigyn Mk1 sUGV reconnaissance robot is a rugged, simple-to-use, throwable ground device conceived to deliver scouting support in difficult-to-access and hazardous places.

Features

The Sigyn tactical rover is purpose-built with aviation-grade carbon fibre and reinforced with polycarbonate frames for a rugged but lightweight build, allowing the operator to deploy the bot with a single handed throw. It provides the operator with a front and back wide-angle ultra-sensitive Day-Night camera, eight dimmable IR LEDs and a payload connection system to execute complex tactical missions from a safe stand-off distance, in any light conditions.

An embedded inertial motion sensor allows smart drive modes and automatic forward-facing camera selection. It uses market-standard batteries, swapped within 30 seconds. Quieter than an SUAV, it allows a more discreet approach to identifying potential threats or unknown dangers.

Controller

As for the Loki Mk2, the Sigyn Mk1 is operated via the same handheld controller, GCS Mk2, providing a strong AES-256 encryption and diversified analogue audio-video receptors which prohibit signal interception and secure all vehicle, payload, and intelligence data.

This small but rugged controller also allows a single operator to control any combination of up to four Loki sUAS and/or Sigyn UGVs simultaneously. Additionally to the controller screen, a new Tactical Wrist Viewer allows other team members to choose between and watch any of the four devices’ feeds, regardless of which device is currently being controlled.

Payloads

The new suite of payloads, from diversionary devices to sensors, will expand to support the Sigyn Mk1 and be interchangeable between both unmanned vehicles. All these tactical components are seamlessly integrated into the SKY-HERO’s Unified Tactical Indoor Recon Robots System.

Upon launch, the Sigyn will be compatible with the Typhon Sound Distraction . This payload provides the operator with 5 single shots or a 5-round salvo; each measured at 165+Db and assists with tactical entry, quick deployments etc. It can also be clipped on without needing any tools, making the payload easily transferable from the Loki Mk2 drone and the Sigyn Mk1 rover. The payload is non-lethal, which negates the risks associated with conventional pyrotechnical devices.

Other payloads in development include a LED light distraction system, which embeds multiple power light sources into a small, rugged aviation-grade aluminium shell. The extremely powerful forward-facing torch or strobe white LED, the green laser pointer, and the fully programmable RGB LEDs will provide a strong tactical advantage from a safe distance.

Both payloads are fully integrated into the GCS Mk2.

Operating System

They benefit all from a smart operating firmware, Odyssy, infusing the entire tactical robot ecosystem with innovative algorithms and artificial intelligence components. Odyssy supports the operation of multiple SKY-HERO’s vehicles (sUAV/sUGV), sensors, payloads, data links, and other sub-systems from as little as one operator control station capable of handling all those advanced operations at the same time by combining intelligence with high-performance and unrivalled capabilities.

This homemade software is the true and vital nervous impulse of this unique Unified Indoor Tactical Recon Robots system, orchestrating all the aerial and terrestrial vectors simultaneously deployed to enable the execution of high profile and time-sensitive missions by allowing operators to focus on the success of their mission.

Top Drone Technology for Military & Defence 2022

was a remarkable year for the drone industry, seeing the technology utilised in new and innovative ways. With drones becoming more widely accepted by both society and professional organisations, it is unsurprising to see the vast adoption of drone technology by Military & Defence organisations.

Through the later stages of 2020 and 2021, we saw a large investment from manufacturers, such as Sky-Hero, Parrot and Typhon, put towards creating task-specific drone technologies for defence purposes.

In this list, we will look at some of the most exciting technology that is available on the market for Military & Defence organisations heading into 2022.

Parrot ANAFI USA

The ANAFI USA initially hit the market in 2020, and is still one of the best drones in its class a year and a half later. With 32-minute flight time and an IP53 rating, the drone is suitable recce operations in harsh weather conditions such as rain or snow.

Additionally, the ANAFI USA is one of the lightest drones in its class, weighing just 499grams. This makes it easily portable for troops in vehicles or backpacks.

However, the main selling point of the ANAFI USA is its data security. Produced in America by French company, Parrot, the ANAFI USA complies with all European Union General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)

No data is shared by default without the consent of the user. Should you decide to share flight data, the logs are stored on secure servers in Europe and as a local copy on the drone.

The drone itself operates an AES-XTS 512-bit encryption, and includes a secure WPA2 Wi-Fi connection to authenticate and encrypt the link between the remote controller and ANAFI USA.

Its signed firmware prevents any malicious modification of the drone’s software, and Parrot uses trusted standards and open protocols to ensure the utmost interoperability and security for all recorded data.

The Loki Mk2 is an internal tactical drone manufactured specifically for military and defence organisations. Building on the foundations of the somewhat experimental Mk1, the Mk2 provides a rugged solution for searching and clearing rooms during tactical operations.

The main goal for the Loki Mk2 is to reduce risk, by providing remote surveillance before troops enter the premises. It does this through its 15-minute flight time, and 3hr sentry operation time – where the drone is able to sit idle in a location and can be used to monitor activity via its camera and microphone. The drone also has a built-in night vision camera, for any after-dark operations.

The Mk2 is built to handle all sorts of wear-and-tear, from crashing into walls to being thrown on the ground. Sky-Hero has incorporated a feature named ‘turtle-mode’, where it can flip itself over if it crash lands upside down, removing the need for an operator to do so manually.

A drone of this calibre would be useless without proper security. That’s why the Sky-Hero Loki Mk2 is AES-256 encrypted. There also is no ability to record on the Loki Mk2, meaning that no data will be stored locally on the drone or controller. This means that if the drone falls into the wrong hands, you won’t have to worry about any video feeds etc.

Additionally, the connection between the drone and controller is analogue, meaning that connection for the drone will not abruptly cut out when it loses connection. Instead, the operator will see a slow degradation of quality, which will indicate they either need to move forward to another vantage point or bring the drone back in.

Lastly, the Sky-Hero Loki Mk2 also has various payload options that can be attached to the underside of the drone, providing extra support for boots on the ground officers.

Typhon Distraction Payload

The Typhon distraction is a non-lethal payload that can be connected to both the Sky-Hero Loki Mk2 and Parrot ANAFI USA. A fully loaded Typhon payload weighs a total of 96 grams and is capable of holding 5 cartridges. Each event created by a cartridge displays an ear-piercing 169dB and can be set off using the same controller that is used to operate the drone itself. You can set off events either via single shots or burst rounds, giving the operator ultimate flexibility.

Typhons development of the non-lethal distraction payload was set out due to the extreme number of injuries caused to operators via conventional flashbangs. Therefore, their aim is to increase safety while maintaining the same, if not higher, level of efficiency.

Typhon DS-100 GMOE

Building a similar adaptation system to that of the distraction payload, Typhon are developing a glass breaker for the Sky-Hero Loki Mk2.

Weighing just 140 grams and clipping to the underside of the Loki Mk2, the payload will change the way tactical entry is conducted by special operations forces.

The GMOE unit is designed to break toughened, safety glazed sealed units (double/triple glazed), up to 42mm. It will also compromise laminated and tempered glass but will not ‘drop’ the glass from the frame.

DJI Matrice 300 RTK

Our next drone is one that you may be more familiar with than some of the other products, and that’s the DJI Matrice 300 RTK. The M300 is commonly recognised as one of the best drones across the entire drone industry.

The stats speak for themselves. The drone has a 55-minute flight time, unrivalled for quadcopters, and is also IP45-rated, meaning it can fly in adverse weather conditions. The M300 can also simultaneously operate up to 3 payloads and carry up to 2.7kg of additional weight.

But that’s just the start. By pairing the DJI Matrice 300 RTK with the Zenmuse H20T, you unlock a world of other abilities. The H20T has 3 cameras, a top of the range 640 x 512px thermal camera; a 12MP wide camera; and a 20MP Zoom camera that has up to 200x maximum zoom.

The payload boasts smart tracking and pinpointing capabilities, allowing users to follow selected targets autonomously and send the pinpointed flight data to other flight operators. Additionally, DJI have made it possible to daisy-chain operators, meaning that you can pass over control remotely to a colleague who is in a separate location.

Running in tandem with this is the dual operator function, whereby you can have an operator piloting the drone on one controller and an additional operator controlling the payload on a slave controller. This allows your drone pilot to focus on their flight path while the other gathers data.

Coptrz assisted Brigantes and the British Army in hosting the inaugural Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Solutions event at Battle Lab. Over 15 brands presented their range of products to 100 visitors.

About the Event

The event aimed to create a unique opportunity for the visitors to learn about the wide range of companies within the drone industry.

Held at Dorset Innovation Park, over 100 members from the Ministry of Defence attended to gain a greater understanding of how the products on show can work seamlessly together to create a complete solution and bring vital elements to the battle space. Based in Belgium, Sky-Hero lead the market in the field of next-gen indoor flying cameras. With a rich history of providing equipment for police officers and soldiers, their products supply immediate capabilities to detect, reduce and clear threats in complex terrain such as dense urban areas, confined spaces and underground passages.

The Loki mk2 is a completely GPS-denied tactical drone that operates without any need for an internet connection. It can be used as a sentry for video or audio for up to 3 hours when stationary and a pilot can operate up to 4 drones from a single controller.

Typhon

Typhon are a UK-based company with a focus on creating non-lethal, reloadable distraction devices. Their mission is simple, provide unrivalled products that negate the risks associated with conventional pyrotechnic devices .

The Typhon DS-100 distraction payload is fully integrated into the Sky-Hero LOKI MK2 platform. The GCS software allows for an operator to choose between a single event or burst initiation of the Typhon distraction cartridge, providing maximum operational flexibility.

Wingtra

Headquarted in Switzerland, Wingtra is the biggest producer of VTOL drones in the world. With a large focus on mapping, Wingtra have made a name for themselves for their speed and efficiency.

The WingtraOne PPK VTOL can map 10-14x faster than a quadcopter and unlike other fixed-wing drones, it is able to take off vertically like a helicopter, removing the need for hand launches or catapults. Once in the air, it flies like a regular fixed-wing aircraft, with flight times of up to 55 minutes.

Pix4D

Pix4D have been providing software solutions for professional drone-based mapping since they were founded in 2011. Developed from years of scientific research, Pix4D software uses images taken by hand, drone, or plane and creates customizable results that complement a wide range of applications and software.

Pix4Dreact is a simple 2D software that allows users to obtain the rapid and reliable situational awareness needed for quick decisions in the field. On the other hand, Pix4Dmapper is useful for planning or evaluating missions, using 3D reconstructions of the environment to visually verify and improve accuracy.

Planck Aero

Based in San Diego, CA, Planck Aero was founded in 2014 by a US Navy helicopter pilot with the vision of making unmanned aviation simpler & safer. Planck believes that personnel should focus on high impact tasks, not flying an aircraft.

Their minimal hardware is built onboard the UAV device, offering autonomous tethered or untethered flights, with no calibration required

Aircrafts can operate with the push of a button from trucks, ships, unmanned vehicles, confined spaces, and fixed locations.

Much more than a positioning system, Planck ACE is a full-fledged control system that adapts to the conditions and motion of the host platform, replicating the actions that would be performed by a highly skilled pilot.

Doosan

With more than a century of history, Doosan is a global leading player in the UAV field, using their fuel cell technology to create some of the world's most extensive drone batteries and devices.

Their aim is to enable reliable long-endurance flights that accelerate the growth of the UAV industry.

The new DS30 UAV has become the world’s first mass-manufactured hydrogen cell drone. This drone is excellent for delivering supplies to remote areas due to its 20 minute flight time and 5kg maximum payload.

Anduril

An American company that provides both hardware and software for Security and Defence purposes. All Anduril products operate off the back of their Lattice AI software, which collates real-time data into a single-autonomous operating picture.

This results in unrivalled, real-time situational awareness, so that human operators can respond instantly and accurately with the best information possible.

Anduril products range from rapidly deploying sentries that are sustainable with minimal maintenance in austere conditions, to their own military specialised drone, the Ghost 4 sUAS VTOL. This drone boasts a high payload capacity, near-silent acoustic signature with fully watertight functionality.

senseFLY

Founded in 2009 in Switzerland, senseFly is the commercial drone subsidiary of Parrot group. Their mission is to make work safer and more efficient through proven drone solutions that simplify the collection and analysis of geospatial data.

The result is for the user to be able to make better decisions, faster.

Their flagship drone is the eBee X, a lightweight & hand-launched VTOL designed for all mapping missions. Built to reduce downtime and cost, you can swap out the damaged parts as needed. The VTOL is also light rain resistant and compatible with Pix4D mappers.

What are On The Man drones?

On the man drones are military grade aircrafts without a pilot. They are controlled from the ground and are used for a wide range of activities including targeting, surveillance, mapping and distraction – in the interests of public safety.

They are small, lightweight and portable aircrafts that do not require an extensive supporting infrastructure in which to get the data from. They are functional and immediate to fit the time-conscious needs of this type of use. Drones for recce (reconnaissance)

In the interests of public safety, on the man drones can be used to scout out unknown environments that could be too dangerous for humans to venture. The drones will gather data and reconnaissance information about the area, bringing it back to be analysed and used for tactical operations.

The drone’s capability allows it to not only build a geographically accurate map, but also a semantic one. The intelligent onboard computer recognises roads, cars, buildings and other objects and identifies them on the map. When the drone’s mission is completed, it can provide clickable images, which can be downloaded and evaluated

Drones for mapping and surveying

Regarding mapping and surveying, drones are quick, safe and accurate for deployment in a first-eyes-on-the-ground scenario. They can cover a wide area range within a limited amount of time, providing data that can be processed within minutes.

With repeatability, which is often needed in the military, they are fast and efficient. Teams can make regular surveys, hourly, daily or weekly to make comparisons and re-address the situation on a real-time basis.

Leading photogrammetry software such as Pix4D Mapper can be used easily to collect survey-grade data and create 4D models with basic training and very little technological ability

Drones for military command operations

Depending on the mission, on the man drones may be tasked with supplying tactical information about the immediate area during a military command operation. Essentially, this allows teams on the ground to make better and faster decisions, which could be vital when facing enemy forces.

The sensor equipment, the areas flown over, the communication links and control of the airspace in which they are operating will all vary depending on the operation. On the man drones can be used for real-time planning, information dissemination, commander’s attack view and ultimately for making precise and well-informed decisions.

Drones for distraction

Distraction payloads are very lightweight aircrafts, which aid as additional tools to help during military operations. Set with a timer by an operator, these payloads emit loud sounds up to 169 decibels, with low flash and low fragmentation, acting as a distraction technique as teams enter a specific room or building.

As well as aiding as a distraction tool, this type of on the man drone can also act as an attraction tool – to gain attention on the ground when needed.

Typhon is primarily designed for military, professional public security and offender management markets. Applications include covert operations, counter-terrorism, law enforcement, close protection, aviation and maritime.

Drones for search & rescue

On the man drones are ideal for use by the emergency services as a search and rescue tool. Police, firefighters and volunteer rescue teams can use these unmanned aircrafts to search for missing persons or victims of crime in need of rescue. They can also be used, instead of dangerous helicopter missions, as an eye from the sky to locate a person lost on a mountain, or at sea, for example.

In the search for missing persons, infrared (IR) thermal imaging cameras can detect human body heat. This capability greatly increases the ability to find people or objects at night that may be hidden, as well as during daytime operations too.

Drones for accidents & disasters

On the man drones can also provide real-time visual information when a disaster or incident threatens the lives of those around it. During such incidents, emergency responders need such real-time information to be able to make better decisions faster so that lives can potentially be saved.

Natural and man-made disasters such as fires, floods and chemical spills often make conditions too difficult for relief workers to provide immediate assistance. Therefore, drones can provide awareness over a vast area of dangerous terrain in quick time, reducing the size of the rescue team needed to respond.

Such drones can be used to map disaster areas, providing greater advantages in both cost and response times when compared to traditional methods. They can be deployed quickly, generating high-resolution and 3D mapping, identifying hotspot areas that have sustained the most damage.
